Battle  Scenes  --  Field  Battles

All reliefs are depicted at the same scale.
Reliefs are shown with monumental panels first followed by 3-register reliefs.

Monumental Reliefs

hind legs of 2 horses
Fragmented lower part of a monumental (probably single-register) relief depicting both pairs of hind legs of four horses moving toward the left. Previous publications (e.g., Sobolewski 1981: 266) have indicated that the relief depicts only two horses, but all the legs shown have the hock of rear legs, depite that only two tails were carved. It would seem that the horses are rearing slightly, though normal Assyrian convention would have the pairs of rear rear legs together for a rearing or charging horse.

The front part of the front horses' legs would have been carved on the next slab to the left.

Date: probably period of Tiglathpileser III

Material: not specified

Dimensions: H = 0.86m; W = 2.45m; Th = 0.16m (left and right edges original)

Provenance: square N0/W30 (in the middle of the southern section; in secondary fill )

Inv. # NA13-76

Fragment of a three-register bas relief assembled from three pieces and most likely depicting part of the Arab campaign.

A lady looking back (and begging for mercy) while riding a camel who moves to the right. Under the camel, lies a fallen man also looks back. A headless body lies in the upper left of the slab. Behind the camel runs a man looking back and raising one hand in his defense.

This relief matches a presumed-lost relief, as seen in the drawing (left) from Barnett & Falkner (1962), plate 17, series A, lower slab 7b. Possibly part of the Arab campaign narrative.

Date: period of Tiglathpilesar III

Material: not specified

Dimensions: total H = 1.48m; total W = 1.75m; Th = 0.20m; H of plinth = 0.40m; H of lower register = 0.89m; preserved H of middle register = 0.21m (left, right, bottom edges original)

bas-relief panel

Complete corner bas relief slab with two rows of figures separated by an inscription band and a full-height sacred tree at the corner.

Corner tree has palmettes placed symmetrically on both sides of the corner; the tree is narrow.

The upper register depicts a bearded warrior in a short tunic looking left; he carries a spear (whose end is on the next slab to the left) and shield. The very end of what appears to be a sword of the person on the next slab is seen below the figure's spear.

The middle register contains two 7-line inscriptions (one on each side of the corner), surrounded and divided by guidelines (see below).

The lower register depicts part of a post-battle victory procession. There is one bearded warrior in a short tunic wearing a pointed helmet facing left. He carries a sword and spear. The ends of his right foot and hand are on the next slab to the left. Fragments of a large shield from the adjacent slab can be seen above this figure's spear.
